Jacksonville First Coast Head Race results

Congrats to everyone who participated in the First Coast Head Race in Jacksonville! As always, our rowers did an outstanding job representing ORC. We certainly had some challenging times on the water and unfortunate changes due to a temporary halt of races, but it was a great day! The course was shortened in the afternoon and many were excited to jump into more race categories.

Below are some of the incredible results produced by ORC rowers:

Master Women's 8+

1st PLACE GOLD - ORC's Cre8havoc with an incredible 18:21 finish!!! (Vicky, Jana, Karen, Becky, Adrienne, Jamie, Linda, Leslie) Great job blowing everyone away - even the college crews!!!

2nd PLACE SILVER - ORC's 2nd 8 with an awesome 20:01 finish!!! (Jilianne, Leah, Audrea, Cydney, Kim, Julie, Jennifer, Liz, Gwenn) Great job ladies!

Master Men's 4+

2nd PLACE SILVER - Betsy Baker, Mark Hatter, Ted Brown, John Hood and Pat Crowley - these guys cleaned the course with a 21:09 finish! This was also Betsy Baker's very first time coxing a head race and she did a beautiful job conquering those rogue waves!

Master Women's 4+

2nd PLACE SILVER - Liz, Cydney, Kim, Julie, and Gwenn rocked the boat down the course with an incredible 10:90 finish!!! Fantastic!

Again, congrats to all of our quality rowers and scullers who participated in this race.

Hope for the future

From Tanya:

Good Afternoon!

As some of you may know, there have been some recent changes with regards to the organization of our team. Several women of the M/W group have chosen to row in set boats and made the announcement at this morning's practice. Please understand that the decision was by no means an easy undertaking. There was a great deal of thought put into the decision, and they delayed in making the announcement to avoid hurting anyone's feelings. We have made great friends, made great memories and will move forward with much continued success.

With that said, I want everyone to know that we are still a team; we just have our own boats and that's the only difference! We will all work very hard to assist each other with getting boats on the water and making it a smooth transition. The club operated like this for many years, and the system worked very well. You'll experience it and become comfortable with it quickly. There will be a few bumps and bruises along the way, but we'll get through them together.

"Hope is the companion of power and the mother of success, for those of us who hope strongest, have within us, the gift of miracles." --Sydney Bremer

Race criteria

Rowers, here are the current criteria in order for a rower to qualify to race. Remember, we have time to improve before our next regatta. So let's all work toward one goal: Personal improvement!

1. Must attend weekly practices
2. Must complete weekly erg pieces
3. Must either have a 2K erg score of 8:35 *OR* have a weight to watts ratio of 1.1 or above.

These are reasonable criteria that have been given us. It does not favor either lightweights or heavyweights. We all have an equal chance! -- Betsy

MS 150 bike ride in April

Pictures have been added to the Photos area from the MS 150 bike ride from Miami to Key Largo. ORC members -- our team is called "Wheels Oar Water" -- train for and ride in these cycling events several times a year to benefit multiple sclerosis research.

The bike rides are challenging, exciting and fun, but most importantly, they're for a good cause. Contact Tanya or Jennifer if you'd like to participate in the next ride!
