Not to cold to work out

Because we have missed so many practices, the Monday-Wednesday group has decided that it's in our best interest to work out even if it's colder than 45 degrees. For our past 2 practices, we have turned bad weather (rain one day and thick fog the next) into great land workouts by doing a 30-minute piece on the erg and doing 30 minutes of calisthenics led by Bojan, who himself has joined in some of the workout. The calisthenics have included various crunches, jumping jacks, pushups, lunges, squats and arm circles. We split into two groups: One started on the ergs while the other started with the cals; then we switched after the first group of ergers had finished.

Our revised weather rule: Please show up to the boathouse no matter the temperature or weather. On bad/cold weather days, bring tennis shoes, water and something on which you can lie down. It might be best just to keep an old pair of sneakers and a ratty towel in your car.

Hammer on

Everyone is encouraged to sign up at Concept2.com (click on "online ranking") and add their erg meters to Orlando Rowing Club's total, helping us climb up the rankings.

As of this posting, ORC has 13 participating members and sits at #64 of 978 organizations. The current erg "season" runs from May 1, 2003, through April 30, 2004, so any meters you have erged in that time can be added to our total. Please feel free to join in the "fun" and help us out!

Erg test

For at least those who row on Monday/Wednesday, Bojan has announced an erg test.

The test is 4000 meters. It can be done on your own time and is due by the end of the month. You can row it at whatever pace is fastest for and most efficient to you.

Bojan asks that you try to complete it with a partner.

He also requires your weight so that he can weight-adjust the scores. Tanya is collecting them and will keep it private if you so choose. Please e-mail your weight to her if you are being tested.

Good luck!

ORC membership dues

ORC membership dues are to be paid by Jan. 31, 2004. Please mail your dues to the address on this page or contact Tanya on where to leave them. You should have received an e-mail detailing the dues schedule. If you did not, please notify Tanya, the club's membership chairwoman, at tanya.bowley@ci.orlando.fl.us.

Summary of recent e-mails

  • Betsy Baker will be our team captain while Nancy is on maternity leave.

  • Monthly boat dues for January through July are $42/month.

  • Monday/Wednesday rowers pay dues to Katie Jarvinen.

  • Tuesday/Friday rowers pay dues to Jennifer Duquette.

  • We will go by a "feels like" temperature to determine whether or not we row in the morning. The official Web site to check the temperature is http://www.weather.com. Temperatures from other Web sites are not valid for our purposes. Try to check Weather.com around 8 p.m. the night before. If the "feels like" temperature is anticipated to be 44 or less at 5 a.m., do not show up. If it "feels like" 45 or higher, we will row. If you do not have access to a computer in the evenings, please buddy with someone and make arrangements to get in touch with each other. Make sure that you are checking the temperature for ZIP code 32810, especially if you live in an outlying city or suburb. The temperature between your house and the boathouse can be different by several degrees. The co-captains are responsible for checking with the coaches and coxswains the night before. If the coaches and coxes show up to the boathouse, they must be paid.
